The Return of Refinement
The term “boutique hotel” has become synonymous with everything and nothing. Yet the newly opened Stockholms Stadshotell – boldly named in Swedish, and only in Swedish – offers a rare and distinctive hotel experience by bringing back the independence and singular vision that boutique hotels once stood for.
While the name refers to the Swedish tradition of the “stadshotell” – true social meeting places that were common across Sweden in the 1960s – this project by restaurateur Johan Agrell and his colleagues is about expanding the idea of personal choice and, indeed, comfort.

A welcoming hotel in the heart of Södermalm
The hotel includes a bistro, a bar and a dining room – all designed to bring Agrell’s unpretentious and, quite simply, joyful cooking to both hotel guests and visitors. There is warm wood, effortless encounters between Swedish and international influences, and a sense of substance without pomposity – all housed within a beautifully restored city palace, positioned between Södermalm’s postmodern city blocks and the vinyl records and beanies of Medborgarplatsen.
A phone call from Johan Agrell marked the beginning of the relaunch of Småland. Much like a chef searching for the right ingredients, Agrell was looking for newly produced versions of his beloved vintage Småland chairs.
Originally, the chair was simply called Småland. But when we saw it in the bistro, the new name felt obvious. The new Småland is a bistro chair – solidly made in the countryside, yet refined enough for the city.

Tray designed specifically for Stockholms Stadshotell.
Following a request from Johan and the team at Stockholms Stadshotell, we developed a series of trays for their room service. Through a collaborative sketching process, we worked together to create a solution that resulted in a carefully considered and elegant final design.
This is a project we are particularly proud of, as it reflects our ability to develop bespoke products based on each customer’s specific needs. With our own production facilities, we have a clear advantage: we can quickly adapt, refine and adjust every detail to meet individual requirements. This gives us the flexibility to create solutions that truly suit the customer’s operations and environment.

In the mid-1960s, Yngve Ekström – one of the era’s leading designers – created Småland: a compact, versatile and comfortable chair with a strong, distinctive character. The timing was perfect. Swedish cafés, restaurants and city hotels were looking for lightness, colour and a new expression for the future.
