Pal – a versatile chair for a variety of spaces

A chair that keeps the rhythm of the room

Designed by Mathieu Gustafsson, Pal is a chair where simplicity, function and carefully considered proportions come together. With its understated expression and great versatility, Pal is designed to work in a wide range of settings – from restaurants and cafés to meeting rooms, workplaces and other public spaces.

Mathieu describes Pal as the drummer in a band: the one who stays slightly in the background, yet plays an essential role in bringing everything together. In the same way, Pal is designed to contribute to a space without dominating it. A dependable chair with a distinct character that interacts naturally with different types of architecture and interiors.

Form and function in balance

Pal’s design is based on a consistent flat-oval profile – a shape somewhere between round and rectangular. This profile is repeated throughout the chair, creating a cohesive expression with soft lines and a distinct identity.

Behind the seemingly simple form lies a close collaboration between the designer and our factory in Smålandsstenar. By involving production early in the process, construction, material use and manufacturing could be developed alongside the design.

It is an approach deeply rooted in the Småland furniture-making tradition: using materials and resources thoughtfully and creating considered solutions without compromising on quality or expression.

Adapted to the needs of the project

Pal is available as a chair or armchair, with a wooden or upholstered seat. A range of material and finish options makes it possible to adapt the chair to the character and requirements of each project.

The chair is made from solid birch or oak and is also available in a mixed-material version, where an oak backrest is combined with a birch frame. This combination offers further possibilities for working with materiality and contrasts within an interior.

Combining functionality, versatility and an understated design language, Pal is created for spaces where furniture forms part of a greater whole – and is made to continue doing so for many years to come.

Pal at restaurant Lofoten

Located by the water at Aker Brygge in Oslo, Restaurant Lofoten brings together Norwegian seafood traditions and a warm, thoughtfully designed interior. Here, the Pal chair in solid oak with a natural oil finish and a leather-upholstered seat has found its place. A choice of materials that complements the restaurant’s atmosphere and allows Pal to become a natural part of the setting.
